Tirzepatide

Semaglutide and tirzepatide are both glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists used totreat type 2 diabetes and for weight loss purposes. However, they have differences in theirstructures and mechanisms of action. While semaglutide is a once-weekly injection, tirzepatideis a once-weekly injection as well but with a dual action as it also targets the glucose-dependentinsulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) receptor. This dual action may provide additional benefits interms of glycemic control and weightloss compared to semaglutide alone.Clinical trials have shown that semaglutide can lead to significant weight loss in individuals withtype 2 diabetes. Studies, such as the STEP trials, demonstrated an average weight loss ofaround 15% with semaglutide.

Tirzepatide, being a dual GLP-1 and GIP receptor agonist, has shown even more substantialweight loss in trials. The SURPASS trials reported weight loss ranging from 11% to 17% withtirzepatide, depending on the dosage.

It’s important to note that individual responses may vary, and these percentages are averagesobserved in clinical studies. The actual weight loss can be influenced by various factors, including lifestyle, diet, and individual characteristics. We will work with you to determine thebest plan of approach!

There is emerging research suggesting potential benefits in slowing the aging process. GLP-1receptor agonists, like semaglutide and tirzepatide, may have protective effects on variousorgans and systems beyond glycemic control. These medications have been associated with improvements in cardiovascular health, reducedinflammation, and potential neuroprotective effects. Some studies indicate that GLP-1 receptoragonists may influence pathways related to aging and age-related diseases as well farexceeding their use in weight management or diabetes alone.

However, it’s important to note that the understanding of how these medications specificallyimpact aging is still an area of active research, and more studies are needed to fully arrive attheir mechanisms in this context. Happy to talk with you more about any concerns you mayhave with risks or side effects as well as the many benefits!
